Lifting Literacy Priority
You may have noticed some changes in the way we are teaching reading in our school. These changes are part of a statewide commitment to ensure every student develops strong reading skills that will support them throughout school and beyond.
Learning to read is a skill that must be taught—it's not something we’re born knowing how to do. That’s why our teachers are using high-quality, evidence-based strategies to help every child become a confident reader.
At Exeter Primary School, students are spending 60 minutes every day focused on building the literacy skills they need to learn to read in the early years and become confident readers throughout primary and secondary school.
Our students are learning to read through structured and explicit literacy teaching. This means they are building foundational literacy skills step by step, with each new skill reinforcing the last. This approach helps students grow into capable, independent readers.
We’re proud to be part of this statewide effort to provide structured literacy lessons that are proven to work. Thank you for your ongoing support as we help every student succeed.
Attendance
Going to school every day gives your child every chance to learn and grow and connect with their mates and teachers. It’s where bright futures start and where they’ll benefit the most.
We are committed to ensure that students attend school every day, we have created a number of alternative learning programs to support students engage in individual and small group options. If there are barriers to why your child is not attending school, please reach out to your child's teacher or one of the leadership team to discuss how we can support.
If your child does not attend school for five days or more, a member of the Leadership Team will make contact requesting a Doctors Certificate or a Statuorary Declaration as supporting evidence for your child’s absence.
There is no weakness in admitting you need help. If your child has completely disengaged with school, and not attending at all, there is support to help you. In the first instance, talk to us at school. For more helpful tips, please check out the https://anything.tas.gov.au/schools
2026 Student Enrolments
We are already in the initial stages of planning for the 2026 school year. Our planning and teacher allocation is very much determined by the number of students enrolled. If you are a family who does not intend to be at Exeter Primary School in 2026 can you please let us now as soon as practicable by ringing or emailing the school Administration team - Exeter.Primary@decyp.tas.gov.au
If you know of any young people who are ready for kindergarten, we are now accepting enrolments.
Breakfast Club Volunteers
We are in need of volunteers for our Breakfast Club for the following two days, Monday – Tuesday. This is an important service we offer to support our students and families, ensuring students have the best opportunity to start the day ready to learn. If we cannot find any volunteers in the coming weeks, we will not be able to offer Breakfast Club on these days. If you have time in the morning to support, please contact the Administration team for further information.
The Bullying no Way National Week of Action against bullying started this week.
The theme for 2025 is Be Bold. Be Kind. Speak Up.
We’re asked to:
- Be Bold: Speak up and take a stand against bullying.
- Be Kind: Support someone being bullied or excluded.
- Speak Up: Take pride in promoting respect, inclusion and kindness.
Bullying isn’t just a school issue—it affects entire communities. By working together, schools, families and local organisations can help create positive environments where young people feel safe, valued and connected.
Key ways you can make a difference for young people include teaching social skills and positive behaviours, encouraging belonging and taking bullying reports seriously.
This week is an opportunity for schools, families, and community groups to come together and make our stand against bullying loud and clear. Together, we can create a culture of kindness and respect.
If you or someone you know is being bullied, help is available. Visit the Bullying No Way website for resources, advice and support.

Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey
At Exeter Primary the wellbeing of our students is a top priority. We want to hear directly from our students about how they’re feeling and what’s happening in their lives.
Students in Grades 4-6 will soon be participating in the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey. This important survey helps us build a clear picture of our students’ current wellbeing and identify ways we can better support them to thrive and engage in learning. The more students who take part, the more meaningful the insights will be.
This survey is part of the Department’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy.
- Survey Details:
- When: Week beginning 25th August
- Who: Grades 4-6
- What do I need to do: You and your child don’t need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way.
A letter with more information has been sent home with all Year 4-6 students. This includes a list of Frequently Asked Questions and a form to return if you do not want your child to participate.
If you have any questions or would like further information, please contact Belinda Simpson, 6394 4700
Thank you for supporting our efforts to ensure every student feels safe, supported, and ready to learn.
Reconciliation Action Plan @ Exeter Primary
**WE NEED YOU!!!
Seeking Parents/carers and wider family and community representatives
A Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) is a formal commitment to reconciliation. It documents how your school or early learning service will strengthen relationships, respect and opportunities in the classroom, around the school/service and with the community.
RAP Working Groups are usually members of an educational community who are willing to drive the RAP development/implementation journey.
The RAP Working Group should include:
- Members of the local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community (build relationships with communityprior to asking community members to contribute to reconciliation activities in your school or early learning service).
• The Principal/Director (who will ensure executive-level support, and will need to approve the RAP via the Narragunnawali platform).
• Teachers and educators.
• Parents/carers and wider family and community representatives.
Inspired by the rainy winter weather 1-2 Hardman created these colourful watercolour snails to contrast with the raindrop backgrounds.
Next week we celebrate Book Week with 3 special assemblies. All students are invited to appropriately dress up as a book character or in line with the theme. Our book week assemblies will be hosted by the Reading Leaders and parents are invited.

Costumes do not have to be purchased ones, perhaps you have something at home that can be adapted or made with a DIY project. Here are some ideas to get you thinking…. Happy reading and planning!!!

What an amazing sight it was to see so many families (especially dads) come along to enjoy this special night last week. It was so wonderful to see our students enjoying books with their families. We were so grateful to have Australian Opals basketballer, Keely Froling as our guest reader, what a highlight!! The free take-home books were certainly appreciated and the milo drinks warmed up a tummy or two. We hope that students enjoy sharing these gift books with their families.
