As we settle back into the routines of school it has provided me with an opportunity to reflect on some opportunities to continue to support students and our school community.
School Parking and Student Drop Off
Attendance
The attendance of students at school is vital for their academic, social, and emotional development. Everyday a student is not at school can have a negative impact on their learning. If your child is away from school, please contact the school office and notify them as soon as possible or contact the class teacher. Some of the reasons students are away may include:
- sickness/incapacity
- medical, legal, or related appointments
- bereavement of a person your child had a close, significant, or family relationship.
If the reason for absence is deemed not suitable the absence will be recorded as an unauthorised absence. Principals receive notifications about the number of unauthorised absences your child has. We may send you a letter notifying you of the number of unauthorised absences your child has. We will seek to work with you to increase your child’s attendance to maximise their learning if I am concerned about your child’s attendance.
The table below shows what effect being absent from school can have overtime.
Sleep
I have been watching my own children coming home from school during the past weeks, exhausted from the demands of school life and getting back into routine. Recently I was reading some information about the importance of sleep in helping us live a healthier and active life. The following information is sourced from Kids Helpline link -
Sleep is like food for your brain.
Getting enough sleep is important for your physical and mental wellbeing.
Sleep lets your mind recharge and process information. It’s the only part of the day that your body gets to rest and repair.
Sleep can help you feel better, think more clearly, and concentrate better. It gives you energy to complete tasks and can make you more alert.
Without enough sleep you may have problems with thinking, concentrating, memory, reaction times and mood.
The website sets out some of the following things that can help with better sleep.
- Turn off devices at least 30 minutes before bed
- Enjoy some exercise during the day
- Have a regular bedtime and waking up time – and stick with it!
- Develop a calming bedtime routine (quiet & soothing activities)
- Create the right sleeping environment (dark, quiet, cool)
- Avoid stimulants before bed (sugar, coffee, coke, tea)
- Make sleep a priority! Ensure you get at least 9 hours of sleep per night
