Welcome back to Term 2. It has been a very pleasing start to the term as students have settled back into routines and expectations well; the warm weather has been kind to us.
As with any other term it will be a busy one with the following events (to name a few) happening across the term. I ask families to keep an eye out on the calendar to ensure that students are organised and prepared:
- School Cross Country (May 4)
- Parent Teacher Interviews (May 4 and May 5, please book online)
- NAPLAN Testing (Grade 3 and Grade 5 students, May 11 to May 21)
- Swimming and Water Safety Program Grades 3-5 (May 24 to June 4)
- Student reports (end of term)
School Association
The next Association meeting is next Thursday night, May 13 in the staffroom starting at 7.30pm – 8.30pm. After our recent AGM we are in need of a secretary. If you are interested in filling this position please see Sheryl to discuss the requirements of the role. An agenda will be published in the coming days.
Access to School Grounds After Hours
We are very fortunate to have beautiful play spaces within our school. I am more than happy for families to access the equipment or ovals after school hours to engage in physical activity in a safe and respectful way. Recently we have had several incidences where members of our community have not treated our facilities fairly and we have experienced some vandalism. I ask members of the community if they know of anyone or have witnessed any destruction within our grounds to please contact the office and let us know.

ANZAC Day – School Choir
Last Sunday, April 25, our school choir performed at the Exeter community ANZAC Day service. As a school community we are very proud of the way in which they performed and represented us. We thank them for their commitment and representing EPS as we honour and remember all those who are in the Armed Services, past and present, and the work they do to ensure we have a safe country to live in.
COVID-19
Coming into the cold and flu season, it’s important that we all continue to keep healthy and safe. To ensure we can keep on top of COVID and also cold and flu, make sure you:
- Be alert to any symptoms of cold or flu that you or your child may exhibit
- Get tested for COVID if you or your child have symptoms
- Practise good hygiene, such as covering coughs and sneezes and washing hands
- If you or your child do get sick, stay at home until symptoms have passed, even if a COVID test is negative
Remember, symptoms include fever, tiredness, cough, headache, sore throat, sniffling and sneezing.
To keep our school safe, we are still:
- continuing with increased cleaning
- making sure there is plenty of soap, sanitiser, and tissues available
- applying restrictions to large gatherings of adults and encouraging physical distancing
- requiring visitors to check-in on our sites
Pool Renovations
The changerooms in our school pool area are currently undertaking some renovations. We are replacing the flooring, painting out the changerooms and having our toilets upgraded. These renovations have been made possible by the fundraising efforts of our school community. We thank the School Association for their donation to help facilitate this work.
Kind Regards,

2 Last Day of Term 2
This term at Exeter Primary we will be participating in Mindfulness sessions. Once a week students will visit the PAC with their teacher to work with Shikara from DanceFever to learn about regulation, self-calming and how to keep their mind and body healthy. This program will run for 10 weeks throughout term 2 and has had huge success in providing students with an understanding of using both mindfulness talks and yoga to successfully support them to manage anxiety and navigate stressful situations that might impact their lives. Learning to self-regulate and work within the Zones of Regulation is an important part of the daily work we do at Exeter Primary School.
The Flanders poppy has long been a part of Remembrance Day, the ritual that marks the Armistice of 11 November 1918, and is also increasingly being used as part of Anzac Day observances. During the First World War, red poppies were among the first plants to spring up in the devastated battlefields of northern France and Belgium.
The poppy has also become very popular in wreaths used on Anzac Day. An early instance took place in Palestine, where poppies grow abundantly in the spring. At the Dawn Service in 1940 each soldier dropped a poppy as he filed past the Stone of Remembrance. A senior Australian officer also a laid a wreath of poppies picked from the slopes of Mt Scopus. (Source: Australian War Memorial)
3-4 Clark/Beams have been putting their own unique artistic skills to work in decorating their poppies as part of the Anzac work we have been doing in class.
In 3/4 Zandavar we read Simpson and his Donkey by Mark Greenwood and Frane Lessac, as part of our work on ANZAC Day. Students responded to the text by creating their own images based on this heroic story.
The STEAM Leaders at Exeter Primary School help facilitate the running of lunchtime STEAM activities for students across the school. Some of our activities so far have included: the designing and construction of gravity car racers, introduction to Scratch coding and collaborative Minecraft Edu challenges.
Additionally, Grade Teams have the opportunity in 2021 to participate in a sequence of STEAM lessons following the Engineering Process. Teams of students collaboratively work together on a real-world problem, brainstorming, designing and modifying possible solutions intertwining science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematical knowledge, skills and dispositions.
The Grade 5-6 team, having been inspired by Elon Musk’s vision for Mars, have been set the challenge to design a pasta rover capable of travelling down a 1 metre ramp and then continuing forwards for an additional metre. All the while, designing and building their pasta rover within a budget. Each piece of pasta costs a specific amount! Can they build their rover with $60,000,000.00?
