Swimming and Water Safety Program
This week our Grade 3,4 and 5 students have begun participating in the annual Swimming and Water Safety Program. The Department of Education provides the mandatory program for students to participate in quality swimming and water safety instruction. The program has a strong emphasis on water safety, stroke development, building swimming stamina, developing knowledge and understanding of safe swimming environments, the use of floatation devices and boat safety. These elements also build a foundation for participation in aquatic activities into adult life.
Kinder Playground Makeover
During the past few weeks the Kinder students have witnessed tradesmen in their yard working on making it a more enjoyable place to play. Work undertaken included:
- Drainage in the lawn to help with water run off
- New swings
- Up grade to bike /walking paths
- Mud kitchen
- Natural Stone Riverbed
- Rock Boulder Play Area
The Kinder teachers have reported a change in the way in which students are playing cooperatively and are engaging in the improved space.
School Association
After the last School Association meeting on May 13, the Association is pleased to introduce Gemma Tuxworth as their new secretary. The School Association is please to have Gemma as part of the executive team.
The Association works with the Principal to achieve shared outcomes for learners and the whole school. Being part of the School Association provides a forum for the sharing of knowledge and skills.
Parent and community engagement in the school is important, as it:
- creates a collaborative culture within the school
- uses existing community strengths to benefit all learners
- creates collaborative teamwork between staff, parents, and the community
- inspires and helps learners to succeed
- helps create better understanding between the local community and school
- facilitates a good understanding of the value and benefits of education
- provides adult learning opportunities
- supports opportunities for creative thinking
- creates community support.
Research shows that children do better at school when their parents are involved and engaged in their education. We would welcome and encourage parents to attend the next meeting on the 10 June at 7.30pm. Agenda items will be in the next newsletter.
The Australian Curriculum - Have a say in what your child learns.
All students from Prep to Year 10 in Tasmanian schools are taught the Australian Curriculum.
The Curriculum is currently being reviewed and refined to ensure that it continues to be world class and best meet the needs of our students in our changing world.
Families and school community members are invited to contribute to the review. This is an important opportunity and we encourage you to visit the website and have your say in what your child learns.
The website is open from 29 April – 8 July.

National Simultaneous Storytime
Over a million students across Australia and New Zealand recently participated in NSS2021, including students at Exeter Primary School. From the International Space Station, astronaut Dr Shannon Walker read the book Give Me Some Space! by Australian author and illustrator Phillip Bunting. The students enjoyed the story, especially the obvious lack of gravity experienced by the astronaut as she read the book. They really enjoyed seeing so many staff members dress up as astronauts for the day! The event aims to promote reading, and our school staff hope that they helped to promote reading too.
Prep Lockwood have done some drawings about travelling to space.
Stevie- The astronaut has a breathing tube for oxygen because there is no oxygen in space.
Eli- The astronauts have sad faces because they are cold- it is cold in space.
Saxon- I am looking out of the window. I can see the moon.
Australian Early Development Census
Playing our part to build a national picture of child health
In July 2021, our school, along with thousands of others across the country will begin preparations for the fifth Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).
The AEDC gives us a national picture of the development, health and wellbeing of children in their first year of full-time school. Since 2009, the census results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and develop better policies to target support for children and families.
Children don’t miss any class time, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information for the census. The AEDC gives us data at a school and community level - it isn’t an assessment of individual children.
Some teachers have also noticed that completing the assessments made them more aware of the needs of individual children and the class as a whole and that the census results are useful in planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing class programs.
Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.
To find out more about the census and how communities are using the data to help children and families visit the AEDC website: www.aedc.gov.au.
