Gaming and Screen Time - (as sourced through safety.gov.au/parents)
During the past few weeks, I have had several conversations with parents about the amount of gaming and screen use their children are having and the impact it is having on sleep, relationships, and learning. I noticed with interest that Screen Time and Gaming have been key items in local and mainland news (Television and Newspapers). Whilst there are benefits of using technology, devices, and gaming it needs to happen in moderation.
Whist there is conflicting research and advice about screen time, parents need to be considering the following:
- Child’s age and maturity
- Content the child is consuming (many games and social media platforms have age ratings)
- Learning needs
- Family routines
- Is screen time impacting on family, exercise, sleep and learning time
- Obsession on websites and games
- Reduced personal hygiene
- Appearing anxious, irritable, and angry
- Becoming withdrawn from friends and family
Some key actions parents and carers can take to help support Screen Time and Gaming can include:
- Locate games, devices, and consoles in an open area within the home
- Activate parent controls and safety features on the device or apps.
- Take an interest and talk to your child about their gaming interest or play alongside them
- Monitor the time your child spends online
- Turn off internet connections or devices at a suitable time during the evening (one hour before planned bedtime). Develop clear boundaries and limitations with your child.
- Encourage your child to take an active part in regulating their own screen and gaming time
There are some useful websites that provide great resources and information for parents / carers in helping provide safe, secure, and harmonious Gaming and Screen Time environments.

In the Garden with Mrs Jordan and 1/2 classes
Garden with Mrs Jordan and 1/2
The Grade 1/2 classes have had a busy 5 weeks in the school garden! They have enjoyed collecting seeds from our sunflowers, planting winter vegies, picking produce, digging potatoes, painting Mother's Day rocks, creating leaf art, scavenger hunts, science activities and garden maintenance. The last 2 weeks they have enjoyed cooking and tasting with garden produce, making beetroot dip, chocolate and beetroot muffins, and pasta with garden fresh sauce. They have had a fantastic experience working with Mrs Jordan.
PCYC Excursion
Prep Lockwood went on an excursion to the PCYC. We had a fun time in the gymnastics and trampoline rooms. We were learning to walk or crawl along the balancing beams, swing on the bars, and how to do different bouncing activities on the trampoline. After this we went to the City Park for a walk, a play and some lunch. As we walked around we looked at the features of the park.
Seahorse World Excursion
Prep/1 Mahar went on an excursion to Seahorse World. We learnt some interesting information about seahorses. We used this knowledge to create a painting of a seahorse in its natural habitat.

Peter Habel
Esk Band students have been working hard throughout the term. They have been expertly led by their tutors in both individual skills, and with techniques needed when practising and performing in larger groups.
It has been pleasing to see so many students practising at home ready for rehearsal each week, this is such an important part of the process and certainly a pathway to success in Music.
Both beginner and continuing bands are currently rehearsing for an upcoming performance in the PAC here at Exeter Primary, and all members are excited for the ESK BAND OPEN DAY that will be held at Newstead college next term for all schools participating in the programme.
On Friday, 18 June Write a Book in a Day competition was held. Students worked in teams to write and illustrate books according to specific parameters – all within a 12-hour time limit. It was a busy and exhausting day, but students worked diligently and cooperatively to produce books of a high standard. Their books will now be judged and, then, distributed to children’s wards in hospitals across Australia. We look forward to participating in Write a Book in a Day in 2022.
