I just spent the long weekend with friends camping. It was a wonderful experience where technology was not accessible, therefore not engaged with. It was wonderful to see children riding bikes, swimming, interacting and just enjoying being outside! I reflected upon the challenges many parents face with the challenges of technology in the home.
Screen Time
The following information is sourced from the following website, Parents | eSafety Commissioner. It provides parents and carers with valuable resources and information to help navigate the technological world our children live in.
There is no magic figure. The right amount of screen time can depend on a range of factors like your child’s age and maturity, the kind of content they are consuming, their learning needs and your family routine.
Consider your child’s screen use in the context of their overall health and wellbeing. For example, is online time getting in the way of their sleep and exercise? Is it impacting on their face-to-face connections with family and friends? The answers to these questions will guide you and help strike the right balance of online and offline activities for your child.
Signs to look out for if screen time is having a negative impact on your child may include:
- less interest in social activities like meeting friends or playing sport.
- not doing so well at school
- tiredness, sleep disturbance, headaches, eye strain
- changes in eating patterns
- reduced personal hygiene.
- obsession with websites or games
- extreme anger when being asked to take a break from online activity.
- appearing anxious or irritable when away from the computer
- becoming withdrawn from friends and family
Some behavioural changes described above are a normal part of growing up but, if you are concerned your child is struggling, try to find out why — there may be underlying issues such as cyberbullying, friendship difficulties or mental health issues.
Strategies to help support your child reduce screen time:
- all screens off in bedrooms after a certain time for older children
- all screens off at least one hour before planned bedtime.
- all family members switch off at dinner time.
- devices charged overnight in a place your child cannot access.
- A minor reduction each day or a ‘15-minutes to switch-off’ warning can help the transition to a more balanced use of time.
Keep an eye on the games, apps and devices your child uses. Chat with your child regularly and help them stay aware of how much time they are spending on different online and offline activities.

5-6 Sundra Novel Study - Two Wolves
In 5-6 Sundra we have been reading the novel Two Wolves by Tristan Bancks. We have been integrating our novel study with reading comprehension, writing, grammar spelling as part of our English lessons.
Tristan Bancks writes with lots of suspense and literary devices that makes you want to keep reading. We are only a quarter of the way into the book and absolutely love it.
Orders can be brought to the school office, if ordering with cash. Please place orders in an envelope with the student's name and class on the front. Orders can also be placed online using the Book Club Loop App.

Ada R Eco Leader
On Saturday, March 2nd our Eco Leaders represented Exeter Primary School in the Youth Forum at the Tamar NRM Sustainable Living Festival. This event was a community-based event to educate local citizens about moving beyond recycling to going circular and thus reimagining the use of resources.
Our students focused on ‘designing out’ waste, ‘recovering’ valuable resources and exchanging the word waste with resource.
During the workshop, our Eco Leaders listened to local and national climate advocates and had some hands-on practise at analysing and recreating/repurposing resources to redirect them from waste to useful or more efficient products.
They presented their ideas which were then shared with the Panel Discussion hosted by Craig Reucassel (ABC’s War on Waste).
Our Leaders were exemplary ambassadors for both our school and local community.
