Social Media Platforms
There is a lot of publicity presently in the media and in parliament about how to monitor and enforce age restrictions for student access to Social Media Platforms. Many, if not all platforms, have an age recommendation of 13+. At a school level we have to deal with a number of issues which are a result of inappropriate use of ICT which occurs outside the school gate and in the home setting. As a parent I am fully aware of the difficulties monitoring and restricting children accessing social media sites. The link below provides parents/ cares and families information about how to develop strategies and safeguards to promote safe ICT use.

Volunteers
We are extremely fortunate to have volunteers who make themselves available to support the learning of our students in classroom and on excursions. It is now a requirement for volunteers to undertake Mandatory Reporting Training to be active in the school environment.
We all have a role to play in keeping children and young people safe.
This year, there is important training that anyone who works with children or young people must complete. This includes all our volunteers and service providers.
The training is compulsory under new laws designed to better safeguard children and young people in Tasmania.
It will help you understand what to do if you believe a child or young person is or may be being harmed, and to make sure you are doing all you can to prevent this from happening. The training will also tell you what you must report under the new laws.
This simple, online training must be done as soon as possible, and you will need to complete it before you work with any children and young people this year.
Once completed, you will receive a certificate, which you can save. Please show a copy at the office or email it to our school email address.
To complete your training, simply visit Safeguarding Training.
Share your thoughts on school attendance
Help us better understand any barriers that may be in the way, and what supports are needed to help with getting to school.
The Department for Education, Children and Young People is doing statewide consultation on school attendance. 3P Advisory is independently running the consultation. Your answers are confidential, and you won’t be identified.
We want to hear from you. You can take part in an online survey, share or vote for suggestions, or join an online drop-in session via the 3P website. The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
You can also share your thoughts about what you like or don’t like about our Every school day matters campaign.
As a parent or carer, please have your say. Please encourage your child/ren, too.
Every piece of feedback counts. Thanks for helping shape future DECYP initiatives, school-based engagement strategies and public awareness campaigns.

Nature Reading & National Simultaneous Storytime
Nature Reading Challenge
The Reading Leaders are currently running a reading in nature photo challenge. Students are challenged to find the most interesting place they can read in nature and have a photo taken. Photos need to be emailed to Mrs Smith at ellen.smith@decyp.tas.gov.au The challenge runs until next Monday 27 May. All students from Prep to Grade 6 are encouraged to participate to keep up the habit of reading. Winners from each grade will be announced in next week’s whole school assembly and will receive a book prize.
National Simultaneous Storytime
Yesterday was a special day as our students joined children across Australia to simultaneously listen to an online reading of the picture book Bowerbird Blues. This annual event is a vibrant, colourful, fun way to promote the value of reading and literacy held by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).
The book this year was written by Aura Parker. It stars a beautiful bowerbird on the search for BLUE! It’s a moving story of longing and connection, that unfolds as the bowerbird’s search sends him soaring across the sea, sky and city. He swoops and snatches vibrant treasures for his collection, and soon his bower—a mix of natural and unnatural objects—attracts something greater and more fulfilling than he could ever have imagined. Our staff supported the event by dressing in blue for the day.
Hi, I’m Ada and I am an Eco Leader, What’s been happening? We have located a space for our Native Edible Garden, and it will be placed alongside the new 1/2 playground. We also hope we can be upgrading the garden behind 5/6 Wood and 5/6 Dehaan’s classrooms. This will help us learn more about: the culture of Aboriginal people; our local environment (by learning more about Australia’s native plants) and it will help us be more sustainable. Additionally, it will help our school look more beautiful and make our community happy. Watch this space as we progress, we will keep you updated. P.S. We are looking for community support on sourcing mulch and plants, contact the school or Ms Petrohilos if you can help.
