Respectful Relationships
Teaching of Respectful Relationships is an important and ongoing focus at Exeter Primary School. This term we are having a concentrated and explicit whole school focus on building students understanding and capacity to deal with bullying and conflict. Teaching will include focusing on, but not limited to the following:
- Creating a culture of respectful relationships
- Managing feelings and accepting responsibility for ones own emotions
- Strategies to resolve conflict
- Giving information of where to get help
- Highlighting the role of peers and adults in providing support
The following information is obtained from the government website: Bullying No Way.
The website provides a range of factsheets to support schools and families navigate a proactive approach to bullying and healthy relationships.
The national definition of bullying for Australian schools says:
Bullying is an ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behavior that intends to cause physical, social, and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power, or perceived power, over one or more persons who feel unable to stop it from happening.
Bullying can happen in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Bullying behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time (for example, through sharing of digital records).
Bullying of any form or for any reason can have immediate, medium, and long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders. Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.
Behaviors that do not constitute bullying include:
- mutual arguments and disagreements (where there is no power imbalance)
- not liking someone or a single act of social rejection
- one-off acts of meanness or spite
- isolated incidents of aggression, intimidation, or violence.
However, these conflicts still need to be addressed and resolved. Schools are well placed to support students with ongoing issues and problems.
Safeguarding Training Update
Earlier this year, the Department for Education, Children and Young People rolled out Safeguarding Training for staff, volunteers, and service providers.
This training was compulsory for everyone as part of our ongoing commitment to safeguard Tasmanian children and young people and prevent them from harm.
The department has recently released additional advanced Safeguarding training modules.
These are optional and are aimed at anyone who volunteers at a DECYP site, external providers, and anyone in the community who wants to learn more about how to keep children and young people safe.
If you’d like to build your knowledge in this space, the modules are available on the department’s Safeguarding page.
Note: If you require additional assistance to access the modules, please take a look at the FAQs about technical support and additional assistance, which are also on the department’s Safeguarding page.

They used Sharpie pens to outline their colour monster and watercolour paints to give it the colour for the emotion. They then used collage to create a background for their monster.

Respectful Relationships Education
PARENT SESSION: Respectful Relationships Education
Thursday 8th August, 4.45-5.45pm at school. Location School Library
Teaching about respectful relationships and consent helps change the way people think and act. When people treat others fairly and with respect it is less likely for violence and abuse to occur.
The Department for Children and Young People (DECYP)is adopting a whole-of-system approach to respectful relationships and consent education. We aim to stop problems before they begin by using what the research tells us works best.
Schools have been provided with a range of materials to support the teaching and learning in this area with input from children, young people, and experts. The resources help schools and communities understand why violence and abuse happen and show ways we can help to stop it.
The goal of Respectful Relationships Education is to create positive environments where everyone is treated with respect.
Our School Nurse, Annette Whitemore, is leading the sessions on Respectful Relationships with our students, with the support of the class teachers. These sessions align to the Health and Physical Education curriculum. Nurse Nettie has an extensive history working in this area and we are very fortunate to have her expertise.
In Term 3, we will be running parent information sessions regarding Respectful Relationships; where it fits within the curriculum, the key content areas covered and the research to validate the education.
Light refreshments provided.
