Australian Education Union Action

Public sector unions have called stop work action on Tuesday, 27 November, 2018.

As a result of the number of teaching staff participating in this action, there will not be enough teachers on duty at our school to ensure adequate supervision for students. Therefore the Minister has decided that the school will not open until 10.30am.

A letter has been sent to all families advising our arrangements for the day as below:

  • Students to arrive at school between 10:30am – 11:00am
  • Students will be supervised in the playground during this time until classes begin
  • Classes will begin at 11:00am
  • Buses will run at their normal scheduled times, so parents will need to ensure safe transport of students to school on this morning (Manion’s Coaches – 63831221, McDermotts Coaches 63303717, Scotts Bus Services 0409971887).

I sincerely regret the inconvenience to parents and the disruption to the learning program for students; however, student safety is my primary concern.

End of Year Reporting

Australian Education Union enacting work place bans will also impact our end of year reporting process. Reports will be issued and students will be provided with an A-E rating for the Australian Curriculum areas of English, Mathematics, Science and HASS, however, as a result of the work place bans the AEU has directed its members not to include comments on Term 4 student reports. This will mean our reports will not contain a general comment but will have an A-E rating for the above subjects.

Swimming Carnival

We had another successful swimming carnival on Friday 9 November. The weather was kind and students enjoyed participating in the events and supporting their houses. Thanks to Mr Peter Habel for another well run and enjoyable carnival. Our students who participated in the TPPSA Swimming Carnival last week represented our school extremely well and achieved results we can all be proud of. A special thank you to the parents who support these carnivals and encourage such great participation from their children.

Optional Swimming

Our Prep to Grade 2 students are participating in their Optional Swimming Program with Mrs Margaret Armour. Thank you to our parents who have volunteered to support our classes. Our students are enjoying this program and already showing improvement with their water confidence and skills.

Remembrance Day

Our student leaders led our Remembrance Day Service on Monday 12 November to celebrate the 100 year anniversary since the ending of World War 1. It was great to see our students show their respect when remembering those who have died for our country.

Middle Years Literacy Project Launch

Tuesday 30 November was the MYLP official community launch held here at Exeter Primary. Parents, students, staff and community members from Beaconsfield Primary, Exeter Primary and Exeter High were in attendance. It was great to see the partnerships between the three schools continue to grow as we share ideas and work towards improving student outcomes in the Tamar region together. One of the project goals was to develop a cluster wide instructional model, which is a teaching and learning framework that exemplifies best practice and consistency for all teachers.

Risk Management and Excursions

Earlier this year we advised there had been changes made to the Department of Education’s Major Excursion and Risk Management policies and we had updated our processes and procedures in accordance with these changes. With our end of year activities on the way we need to make sure that we manage risk effectively. When undertaking excursions we expect that all students will return to school with their classmates at the end of the excursion. This means that unless you need to pick your child up for an appointment or they are unwell they will return to school with their class and finish the school day as normal. If you do need to pick your child up early for an appointment please contact me before the date and let me know. I thank you for your cooperation with helping to keep our students safe.

Kind Regards,

ArtStart Term 4

Origami Guru

Last term 4 students from 5/6 Clancy/Geale interviewed Mike Gorham (Miki), a community member who volunteers to teach us origami. They talked to him about why he started volunteering and how he became interested in origami.

Miki was born and raised in the UK. He migrated to Australia when he was 25. After a tragic motorbike accident Miki had to have metal plates put in his right leg, causing his leg to be one inch shorter than his left leg. After this accident he could not return to his usual job as a police officer. He was sitting at home one day after his accident still recovering and something caught his eye on T.V. He was fascinated to see that you could fold a square piece of paper into a creation. He decided to give it a go and has been doing it ever since.

Miki also does other volunteering. He is a driver mentor and he also volunteers for Community Transport Service Tasmania helping aged people get around. Miki enjoys coming to Exeter Primary School and we are very grateful to have him.

Miki’s advice for all Exeter students is that we can do anything and to follow our dreams.

Swimming Carnival Report 2018

Congratulations Batman on taking out the Swimming Carnival on Friday November 9. Dalrymple and Brady tried their best but Batman denied Dalrymple their 4th shield in a row narrowly defeating them by 20 points. Final scores were Batman (621), Dalrymple (620) and Brady (467). Well done to all the students on their participation, encouragement, leadership and behaviour on the day which ensured a smooth carnival. I would also like to thank the parents and staff for their assistance with supervision and officiating.

Thanks to the 4 parents who entered a team in the teacher, parent and student relay which provided a bit of fun. For the first time the teachers were beaten with the Grade 6 boys team winning and the parents a close third.

The standard of swimming in the 25m pool was extremely high which enabled me to select a strong team to represent the school at the TPSSA Carnival at George Town on Wednesday, November 14.

In Division 1 events outstanding performances were from:

Grade 3: Willow, Neve, Isabella, Nico, Jacob
Grade 4: Ella, Keona, Grace, Cameron, Jack, Abe
Grade 5: Lakeesha, Milly, Makayla, Lily, Atlan, Avery
Grade 6: Chloe, Eliza, Aidan, Ben, Zayne

Thank you to all who attended and contributed to the Carnival.

TPSSA Swimming Carnival Report 2018

Congratulations to the whole team on your performances last Wednesday at George Town. On what turned out to be a cool, windy day, Exeter was the dominant school with a particular strong showing from our Grade 3, 4 and 5 students. Of the 88 races Exeter won 51, finished 2nd in 12, 3rd in 13 and 4th in 10. Too many outstanding performances to name.

Thank you to Hayden Chick for his management of the team and all the students for your excellent behaviour and effort on the day.
