From the Principal

Wow! What a fabulous few weeks we have had with so many wonderful things happening for our students.

Esk Band Extravaganza

On Friday 23 November our Esk Band students participated in the Esk Band Extravaganza at the Albert Hall. This was a fabulous event showcasing a range of talent and commitment from our students. As always our students were exceptionally well behaved and enjoyed the experience of playing to an audience in such an amazing venue. Thanks to Mrs Emms for her support of the band and attendance at the concert. Again I would like to acknowledge Launceston College for making this excellent program available to us.

Dance Fever

Last Friday some of our 5/6 students performed in Fusion Dance Fever 2018 and what an outstanding job they did! These students have been working on the dances every week over the last 2 Terms and their dedication certainly payed off. I would like to acknowledge Launceston College for inviting us to participate in this program and Chelsea Hibbs, the Launceston College Tutor, who has worked with our students each week. All our students from Grade 3-6 travelled to the Door of Hope to see the performance on Friday and were inspired to be part of this program in the future. A big thank you to Mrs Sims for supporting our students, during their practices and for the performances.

Orientation Day

On Wednesday 28 November our Grade 6 students attended Exeter High School for their Orientation day. Students were given the opportunity to try a typical high school day and find out about the different subjects on offer. The feedback from our students was extremely positive and they are really looking forward to starting High School in 2019. Mr Frerk, the Principal of Exeter High School said our students represented our school extremely well and interacted with a positive attitude throughout the day.

Tour de Cure

Last Wednesday also saw Tour de Cure visit our school. These cyclists were cycling around Tasmania raising awareness of healthy living and how being healthy can improve your wellbeing throughout life and prevent major illnesses developing. Every student received a bag with important health messages to take home. It was fantastic to see 100 bike riders interacting and playing down ball and basketball with our students before school began!

Triathlon

Last Thursday we had a team of students participate in the annual All Schools Triathlon in Devonport. By all accounts this was a great day, with all our students demonstrating determination, persistence and good sportsmanship. Congratulations to all those students who participated and a big thank to Mr Habel and all the parents who supported their children to participate.

Kind regards,
Helen

Esk Band Extravaganza

On Friday 23 November 2018, members of the Esk Band performed at Albert Hall in front of family, friends and the general public. The students participated in a rehearsal throughout the day combining with a number of local Launceston schools and Launceston College representatives. Students opt in to learning an instrument throughout the year and receive tuition from specialist teachers who run the program across local primary schools. The members from Exeter and Beaconsfield Primary come together once a week to learn to play their chosen instrument. The results have been outstanding this year with a number of first year players entering the school band and quality performances provided to our continuing players. It was certainly an extravaganza to see all the members perform after working so hard throughout the year.

Literacy

Author Visit—Belinda Murrell

Last week on Thursday 29 November, Belinda Murrell visited the 3-6 classes to talk about her new series of books, Pippa’s Island. Belinda spoke with students about writing and the joy writing can bring, how she records her ideas and where they come from. It was an engaging experience for all who attended and everyone was keen to start reading some of Belinda’s fabulous books. If you’d like to find out more about Belinda’s series please contact Petrarch’s Book shop for further details.

Launceston Historical Society – History Prize

Last Thursday, the Launceston Historical Society – History prize held their award ceremony at the Launceston Town Hall. This was the first time that Exeter Primary had entered the competition. Each student created a poster after deciding on a historical question about a topic relating to Launceston’s or Tasmania’s history. The judges were impressed with the students’ research about aspects of our local history and even advised they had learnt new information.

Students’ from 3/4 Duncan entered the competition and met the Mayor Albert Van Zetten in his robes and Mayoral Chain of office when he presented the certificates. There were 111 entries in the Grade 3/4 section from schools all over Launceston and every participant received a certificate. We were excited to learn Chloe received an honourable mention for her work on the Supply River Mill, whilst Isabella won the Grade 3 award for her investigation into Why did the 1929 floods happen?

This competition has been established to encourage young people to be interested in our history and to exercise their research and inquiry skills. All the posters are on display in the Launceston Town Library – on level 2 until February 2019.

Sport

Country Gold Cricket Challenge

The Country Gold Cricket Challenge took place on Monday November 26 at Churchill Park. The 2 day carnival was restricted to 1 as overnight rain made playing conditions on the Tuesday too dangerous. The carnival program had already been altered due to Circular Head’s omission. Playing against 4 other northern regional associations, each match was modified from 30 overs a side to modified T20 rules with 10 players a team with 9 batting and fielding.

The Tamar team had 3 games on the Monday winning all of them and was in a good position to win the tournament come the Tuesday. With an uneven amount of games played by each, it was decided not to announce a winning team.

Exeter had 3 representatives with Lachlan, Xavier and Brady. All Exeter boys contributed well throughout the carnival with bat and ball. The team improved in all facets over the 3 games.

Triathlon

Congratulations to the Exeter students who endured cool and windy conditions last Thursday when competing in the Primary Schools Triathlon Challenge at the Devonport Bluff. Exeter had 30 students representing the school with 8 entering individual events. With over 1300 students participating on the day, the focus was on participation and enjoyment to promote a healthy lifestyle. The choppy water conditions turned the swim leg in to more of a dash and splash especially with the chilly conditions. All Exeter students braved the chaos to complete their courses with a smile and sense of achievement. As always the support for one another was a pleasure to see.

A special thankyou to Sheryl Turner for support and organisation for the day and to all the parents who assisted and supported the team.

Debating 5/6 Wivell-Habel

Recently students in 5/6Wivell/Habel engaged in a debate about the statement: Mixed Gender Schools are the Best.

Students enthusiastically worked in teams to discuss, research and select persuasive evidence. This was a great team experience which also allowed students to practise their oral language skills and their critical thinking skills.
