Managing Safeguarding Risks In Our Schools
Our staff play a key role in keeping students safe by proactively monitoring any risks.
The Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) recently released new Safeguarding Risk Management resources for our schools to assist with this.
These resources are designed to help us continuously identify, prevent and reduce risks to students of child abuse and harm, and support our school to be a safe environment where every child and young person can thrive and grow.
During this term we will be reviewing our Safeguarding Risk Management plan for our school. The plan sets out the risks that we can identify, and most importantly, how we can reduce them.
As parents and carers, you play an important role helping us to identify safeguarding risks in our school, and I’m sure you may also have ideas on how we can reduce these risks to keep students safe.
If you or your child/children have any questions, concerns or wish to report any incidents relating to child abuse or harm, I encourage you to reach out to me or a trusted staff member. We welcome your views and any feedback.
The Tell Someone website is also another useful source of information if you are worried that a child may be at risk of harm or is being sexually abused or groomed.
If you have any concerns, the website gives clear information about what to look for, how to make a report and who to speak to.
For further information on the work being done on safeguarding in our school, please visit DECYP's website.
Student Illness
With the change in the weather we have witnessed an increase in children being unwell presently.
If your child is unwell and remaining home I ask parents and carers to contact the school as soon as practicable to inform us about their absence. This will ensure we are meeting the Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) attendance requirements and priority.

Readers Cup is a competition where you form groups and read five books. After you read all the books you and your team will choose a book to create a creative demonstration on the morals of the book. There is also a quiz where the teams will answer questions about the 5 books.
On the 14th of May the three teams that took part in Readers Cup competed to see who would get to go to the interschool championship. At nine o’clock the three teams took the quiz, everyone put in a great effort.
On the same day, in the afternoon the three teams presented their creative representation of the morals on the book they chose. Team GSW presented a diorama about Fantastic Mr Fox, Team Grug presented a PowerPoint about the morals of Parvana, and the Intergalactic Super Potatoes came up with a play about the book Silly Billy.
The Intergalactic Super Potatoes won both the creative challenge and the quiz, so they were the overall winners. In second place was team Grug, and in third place was GSW.
I think Readers Cup was a great competition and that people tried their hardest. I personally enjoyed participating in Readers Cup and I hope other students did too!

With the theme ‘Bridging Now to Next’ for National Reconciliation Week 2025, it is a time to reflect and continue building momentum towards reconciliation in our schools and early learning services, workplaces, and broader communities. This theme invites all Australians to learn more about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and explore how everyone can contribute to promoting reconciliation in our everyday lives.
To support understanding about the idea of Reconciliation students, have invited a grandparent or older relative to come into the classroom on Thursday 29th May to read together, view relevant artwork and/ or play a game. Books have been selected with Aboriginal content plus books with themes like inclusion, connection and family.
Chosen pieces of student art work from across the school will be displayed in local businesses from Friday 30th May.
In addition, we have a small group of Grade 5-6 students that identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander visiting the 3-5 year olds at the Exeter Child Care Centre on Tuesday 27th to share a local Tasmanian Aboriginal Story and complete an activity together.
We hope these small events impact our students in a positive way, increasing their awareness of Reconciliation for Aboriginals, but also at school, at home and within social circles.
Eco Leaders Upcycling Challenge
We have been collecting the bread bags used in our school for upcycling. We have had help from the school canteen and breakfast club, but we need more bags for our workshop.
We want your help!!
Please bring in your clean used bread bags for the month of May.
Step 1
Collect your empty bread bags (shake out any crumbs.)
Step 2
Put your bags in the Bread Bag Collection box in the school foyer
We look forward to sharing more information soon.
Thanks Katie and Layla
Eco Leaders Project Community Workshop
To support our Eco Leaders’ desire to reduce waste, we encourage you to get along to the Micro Skills Fun Day.
We had a fabulous day today at our whole scool Cross Country. The Kinder and Prep classes braved icy weather to start the day with their run. There were plenty of mums, dads, carers, grandparents and extras who braved the chilly conditions to cheer them on. The rest of the day saw the 1-2 classes participating followed by the primary classes in the nice warm sunshine. A big thank you to Mr Young for all of his work to support the event, setting up and training the students in P.E. lessons for the past four weeks. An extra shout out to Mr Chesshire for his preparation of the track. There will be more photos in the next newsletter.

National Simultaneous Storytime
Yesterday was a special day as our whole school joined children across Australia and New Zealand in various venues—such as schools, libraries, community centres, and homes—to simultaneously listen to the same story read aloud. This nationwide event celebrated its 25th year with the aim to foster a shared reading experience and inspire a love of reading among children.
We listened to the online reading of the picture book The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel and illustrations by Danny Snell. It was read by Jorcheck Koman, an Australian TV and movie actor who was born in Poland and moved to Australia when he was 26 years old. The book is a heart-warming tale of love, belonging, and the unlikely companionship between a long-haul truck driver and a little rescue cat. Our staff supported the event by dressing up as a truck-driver or friendly cat.

Basketball Hoops
Hi School Community
Last year we all did such a good job fundraising for the new basketball hoops through the colour run! THANK YOU again.
But some of you might be wondering - where are they?
Around the same time as the colour run the school applied for a grant that would also cover the cost of the hoops. The school was told that we were successful, but the process of getting the money has been a little slower than we would like....
So what next? Principal Zach Taylor and the School Association are looking at options to progress this more quickly, and get the kids actually using the hoops.
We will keep you posted on this.
If you have any questions please feel free to email the school association: exeterprimaryschoolassociation@gmail.com
